William "Pete Runnels - Roughing It- October, 1966
This picture (click to enlarge) was taken in Khe Sanh, Vietnam in Oct 1966. I am near the Jeep, and a Marine name Cook is standing next to me, but I can't remember his first name or the Marine's name who is in the Elephant Grass Hut coping the NVA. This picture is also posted at the Vietnam Memorial as NSA. We were the first Intercept unit in Khe Sanh. Oh by the way, we built that Hut from the grown up with things we gathered in the surrounding area. We were really roughing it! No mail for 28 days and the only other Marines we could talk to was on the Rocky Pile. The Rocky Pile would relay our messages to Dong Ha for us. We never knew how things were until the sky cleared one day and Gen Green flew up in his Helicopter and took us out of there.  Khe Sanh was the first and only place I've seen where the clouds formed at ground level. This little Detachment of ours ID'd many of the units coming from the North to the South. Did they take us serious? I don't know. But I think they could have done more to prevent 1968. Just my opinion!!!!
