Occupation: | experimental aircraft parts & Alpha Sportcycles | | Today, March 1, 2014, we lost one of our best friends, to a long illness, COPD. Michael "Mick" Corcoran, 71yo, Highlands High graduate 1962. Mick worked at McClellan in experimental aircraft parts and managed Alpha Sportcycles. I first met Mick and his wife, Mary (Murphy) Highlands High 1964, while racing motorcycles at Cycleland Raceway in Chico,Ca. While I was on the track making faster riders look good, Mick went on to become Short Track AMA National Champion in 1968. At Cycleland he was... called a "Scratchman", an honor only earned by a few people, it meant that he started on the 60 yard line, and with that handicap, still took 1st place at the end of the expert main event. One fast and smooth rider. Mick was a great builder and fabricator, going on to build custom vans, hot rods and pickups. Over the years, neither of us lost the interest we had in flattrack motorcycle racing, as we traveled to any race, swap meet or show that we could drive to. Mick helped me alot in my shop, sometimes taking rusty parts home, bringing them back the next day looking new. At times fabricating parts for me that I didn`t have the tools to build. One of his last projects was a Yamaha 650 Streetracker that won 1st place in that division at the Classic Japanese Motorcycle Club`s Auburn Show, he`s sitting on the bike in this photo in my driveway. Mick`s kids share his love of motorcycles. Son, Jeff made his Dad proud by racing a Yamaha TT 500 that they built, last summer at Cal Expo`s Vintage Sacramento Mile. Loved by everyone, he`ll be missed by everyone...Race in Peace, Mick by Steve Norberg | | |
