Phil was born in Ontario, California and raised by his mother and stepfather Agnes and Eugene Newcomb.

They moved to Northern California in 1957 where he stayed. He attended California State University Sacramento and graduated with a Master degree in Biology, later he went on to receive a doctorate from Western Colorado University in education.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years Claudia, daughter Amber Barger, grandson Taylor Hanamura, granddaughter Amanda Potter and 2 great grandchildren, Thomas and Aurora. He was also a foster parent to several children throughout the years.

Phil taught high school at Highlands High School for 4 years and then went on to teach the sciences at Sacramento City College for 38 years, from Natural History to Anatomy and Physiology for nursing students.

Phil was active in many organizations and groups. He was very involved with American River Muzzle Loaders, a primitive shooting and camping club. He enjoyed outings with the Capitol As, a group for owners and enthusiasts of Model A cars. He was a passionate follower of Christ and was active in his church, Fair Oaks Presbyterian, participated in the Paraclete counseling program there and led a lively Bible study in their home on Thursday evenings.

He enjoyed canoeing and took at least one trip every year to Canada and brought many different people along with him throughout the years. If you came by the house you might find him out in his wood shop making finely crafted items from bowls to cribbage boards, working in his beautiful yard or framing photos from one of his many trips.

A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 28 at 11:00am at Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church. Services will be performed by Pat and Barb Bennett, guest Pastors from Kansas and longtime friends.

Shelia Creager Bolt

Sacramento
CA
Highlands High   1960   2013   Female      Ron Creager of San Leandro   Sheila Boltz, a social worker and trailblazer in the psychiatric community who advocated dignity and respect for people with mental illness, died March 15 of heart and lung disease, her family said. She was 70.

As a therapist, teacher, administrator and activist, Ms. Boltz was an ardent proponent of voluntary alternatives to forced psychiatric hospitalizations. She pioneered a social rehabilitation model in Sacramento that emphasizes teaching basic life skills – such as how to make decisions or how to handle conflict successfully – to help formerly institutionalized people regain a place in society.

In 1976, she opened a board-and-care home for severe psychiatric patients called Midtown Manor that became Turning Point, a leading regional provider of mental health therapy, housing and job services. With fewer than three staff workers to serve 43 clients, she introduced the use of patients in recovery as peer counselors to model appropriate behavior and inspire others in need.

"She taught me how to keep a calm head and a big heart," Turning Point chief executive officer John Buck said.

Ms. Boltz went on to help homeless people and jail inmates receive psychiatric services as a Sacramento County program coordinator. She was on the board of Consumers Self Help, which runs wellness centers and the Office of Patients' Rights for Sacramento and Yolo counties. She developed a program at Human Resources Consultants to provide social rehabilitation and medication support services for clients.

"Sheila's main focus in all of her work was honoring the dignity of mental health consumers," said Dave Hosseini, retired executive director of Consumers Self Help. "She was a real advocate for human rights in many ways."

Born in 1942 in Los Angeles, Sheila Ann Creager moved with her family to Citrus Heights and graduated from Highlands High School. She earned a master's degree in social work from California State University, Sacramento, and was a doctoral candidate at the California School of Professional Psychology.

She began working in 1970 as a psychiatric social worker at Sutter Memorial Hospital and taught mental health courses in the Los Rios Community College District. Until recently, she provided training statewide on hiring mental health clients.

She married Ron Boltz, who retired as a professor of social work at CSUS. They raised two children and remained close after their marriage ended in divorce.

"If anybody was born to be a social worker, it was her," her former husband said. "All of her activities were just trying to make a better society and a better life for everyone."

Ms. Boltz was a woman of passionate causes and quirky charm. She was an opera fan who spent many nights at the San Francisco Opera and many hours at home listening to mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli. She was a longtime smoker who wore her long hair in a signature braid and was "a beatnik at heart," her daughter Jennifer said.

She watched liberal commentator Rachel Maddow on TV every night and refused to shop at a grocery chain for years after the United Farm Workers ended its grape boycott. She campaigned against the death penalty and wrote "Bye Bye Lungren," a song opposing former Republican Rep. Dan Lungren, which she recorded with a group of seniors for YouTube.

"She had numbers for Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer on her phone," her daughter said. "She had the White House on speed dial."

Answering a call to duty and adventure, he joined the Navy and after serving in the Korean War on a minesweeper received an honorable discharge in 1954. After discharge, he attended Grant Tech College and then on to Sacramento State. While at Sacramento State he played center on the Hornet football team from 1955-56. In the mid 60's Noel was an assistant coach for the semi-pro Sacramento Buccaneers football team. In 1969, he received his Masters degree from the University of Oregon. After graduation, Noel served as an assistant football coach at Highlands High School before going to Rio Linda High School, where he taught phys ed, was an assistant football coach and subsequently head football coach. He later became the Athletic Director for Rio Linda. Noel retired in the mid 90's from teaching, but continued officiating local high school football games for several more years. In 2004, he was admitted into the prestigious La Salle Club Coaches Hall of Fame. Noel savored adventure and anything outdoors. He was young at heart; he was 81 before he stopped bungee jumping and skydiving. He hated to give those things up. Up until a month before his passing, he was still golfing weekly with friends and running three or four miles a day. He also enjoyed painting, with "works of art" filling his entire apartment. Noel had many friends and he cherished each and every one, mostly coaches he worked with over the years and former students. Whenever there was an anniversary, graduation, wedding or other event - no matter the distance or the time required - he felt that if he were invited, he needed to be there. One could always count on him. He could be gruff on the outside, but had an enormous heart on the inside. As his protege Mike Morris put it "He was a man's man." Noel is survived by son Mike McKee, daughter Lisa McKee, son-in-law Ken Nicholson, brother-in-law Bob White and close friend Christi Rose, He will be greatly missed and loved always. A gathering of friends and family will take place at a date to be determined. Love you dad!!!!!

Here is the information I have on Valerie. When she left Sacramento, she and her family went to RAF Lakenheath, England from 1961-1964. While working in the base recreational center, she met Rudolph H. Gieschen Jr of Wilmington, NC. They married in King Park, Long Island, NY in April 1965 and lived in Wrightsville Beach, NC until later that year. Her husband then reenlisted in the Air Force and they were based at Stewart AFB, NY, Lackland AFB, Tx, and McConnell AFB, Ks. They had four children, Stephanie Anne, Joanna Leslie, James Rudolph, and Michael Brian. In 1978 at MConnell, after an accident and serious surgery to repair her broken leg and ankles, she passed away on August second. Valerie was buried in the National Cemetery in Wilmington, NC. At the time of her death, she was survived by her mother Ella, sister Denny and brother Richard and his wife Marsha. Her father, Lt Col James B. Murrow predeceased her on June 23,1969. Highlands High   1962   2014   Male         Today, March 1, 2014, we lost one of our best friends, to a long illness, COPD. Michael "Mick" Corcoran, 71yo, Highlands High graduate 1962. Mick worked at McClellan in experimental aircraft parts and managed Alpha Sportcycles. I first met Mick and his wife, Mary (Murphy) Highlands High 1964, while racing motorcycles at Cycleland Raceway in Chico,Ca. While I was on the track making faster riders look good, Mick went on to become Short Track AMA National Champion in 1968. At Cycleland he was... called a "Scratchman", an honor only earned by a few people, it meant that he started on the 60 yard line, and with that handicap, still took 1st place at the end of the expert main event. One fast and smooth rider. Mick was a great builder and fabricator, going on to build custom vans, hot rods and pickups. Over the years, neither of us lost the interest we had in flattrack motorcycle racing, as we traveled to any race, swap meet or show that we could drive to. Mick helped me alot in my shop, sometimes taking rusty parts home, bringing them back the next day looking new. At times fabricating parts for me that I didn`t have the tools to build. One of his last projects was a Yamaha 650 Streetracker that won 1st place in that division at the Classic Japanese Motorcycle Club`s Auburn Show, he`s sitting on the bike in this photo in my driveway. Mick`s kids share his love of motorcycles. Son, Jeff made his Dad proud by racing a Yamaha TT 500 that they built, last summer at Cal Expo`s Vintage Sacramento Mile. Loved by everyone, he`ll be missed by everyone...Race in Peace, Mick by Steve Norberg

David George Williams

Highlands High   1963   1967   Male      Steve Williams 62   Introduction - by Steve Williams My brother Dave died at the age of 22 - far too soon for someone who had so much to offer in life. He was mischievous, a prankster and someone who loved to share good times with friends. Wherever he lived, he made good friends. As the son of a career Air Force officer, he lived half his childhood in foreign countries; three years in Germany and three years in Japan. In high school, he was the Senior Class President for the Class of 1963. He was also a 3-year varsity letterman on the swim team. But most of all, Dave loved music. Trained as a classical pianist, he soon discovered that he had an ear for popular music. He could hear a song on the radio and then play the tune on the piano. He loved to play complex syncopated rhythms and he was a skilled bongo player and drummer, playing snare drums in the high school marching band. While a junior in high school, he and several friends formed "The Nomads" – a folk band that played at the California State Fair and had gigs at the Purple Onion in San Francisco. His closest friends, Chuck and Kathy, were members of "The Nomads" and its successor, "The Picardy III".

After two years at American River College in Sacramento, California, Dave was drafted into the US
Army. He qualified for officer's candidate school and completed Infantry OCS as a member of the 55th
Company at Fort Benning, Georgia. He received his commission as a second lieutenant in December
1966. He was assigned for six months to the Combat Experimental Development Command at Fort Ord,
California.

On May 31, 1967, Dave arrived in Vietnam and began serving as a platoon leader with Company A,
4th/47th in the 9th Infantry Division. Three weeks later on June 19, 1967, his company was
decimated in an ambush. Dave was the only Platoon Leader in his unit to survive the ambush.
Severely wounded, he was evacuated to a hospital in Japan where he recovered from his injuries.
Upon his return to the 4th/47th Infantry Battalion, he was assigned to desk duty as the Battalion
Transportation Officer. He loved the job, as he used his leisure time to play the piano and the drums in
the Soldiers' Club. The club director called him her "teeny-bopper lieutenant". His goal was to be
reassigned to the Armed Forces Network radio station in Saigon. He didn't write many letters home
as he did not want our parents to worry. When informed by the Battalion Commander that he would
return to Company A, however, he wrote our parents a letter, saying that only 6 soldiers remained of
the original 36 members in his platoon. He said not to worry—"lightning doesn't strike thrice in the
same spot..." It did. He was buried with full military honors in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, just
south of San Francisco. He is loved and will always be remembered by his many friends, his mother and
father, his brother, his two sisters and his seven cousins. We all know that somewhere Dave is playing
the bongos with a heavenly chorus!

Company A, 4th/47th lost 32 brave soldiers in our June 19th Battle near Ap Bac Village in the Mekong
Delta. 2nd Lt. Dave Williams was the only platoon leader in Alpha Company to survive. The three day
battle left 250 Viet Cong dead and resulted in 47 U.S. soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Letter to Steve Williams from Robert Bischoff - October 3, 2010

Dear Steve,

I just received my Fall Issue of "River Currents" from the Mobile Riverine Force Association and saw
your notes regarding your brother David. I was not his C.O. at the time of his death, but I was his
best friend and confidant. I arrived in-country in July of 1967 and was C.O. of Headquarters Company.
Dave and I became buddies because we were not in the field when the troops were (after Dave
returned from the hospital from his wounds of June 19th he was given an administrative assignment).
We took coffee breaks together every day and I got to know him as a friend. He talked a lot about his
family and friends in Sausalito, California. Dave also talked a lot about the June 19th Battle and the
losses that Alpha Company suffered. I became commander of Alpha Company in late January of 1968.
I recall that all of Alpha's Platoon Leaders were killed except Dave who was wounded and that Alpha
lost a total of 32 soldiers that day. In 1969 I visited our Battalion Chaplain, Bernie Windmiller who was
with the troops on June 19th; his stories were beyond description.

When Dave was told that he was going back to the field as a rifle platoon leader, he told me that he
knew that he was not going to make it. I discussed this with him and told him that he was going to be
alright, but he didn't unpack his gear when he left HHC to go back to Alpha Company. I am not a
religious person and I do not believe in fate, but Dave had that premonition. After what he went
through on the 19th of June I guess he was certain that he could not survive another battle.

When Dave went to the field on his first mission in September, I was assistant S3 or the S3 Air. Those
were quiet times, very little activity. The troops worked off the boats and would stay out two or
three days. The command and support group would remain on command and control boats (CCB's) and
would monitor the troop progress/activities. The mission had ended and the troops were on the way
to the pick up point. I received word that there was a casualty and a medevac was required.
Casualties were identified by roster number rather than name and rank. When the roster number was
verified, it was not David. Shortly after, another call corrected the number and it was David. This hit
me like a ton of bricks. They had passed through an open area and a VC popped out of a spider hole
and fired one shot hitting David in the back of the head. That was the only shot fired during the entire
mission.

While I commanded Alpha Company from late January until mid July 1968, we lost 23 killed and 122
wounded. Each and every one of those casualties have had an everlasting effect, but none
affected me more than the loss of David. We were friends and he was one of the neatest, coolest
guys I have ever known. To this day, he crosses my mind constantly.

I hope that this helps and is not too brunt. I may have some pictures of Dave and I, but I don't know
where they are right now. We just moved from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida to the hills of North
Georgia. I will stay in touch...

Letter to Steve Williams from Dave Nelson – December 12, 2010

Dear Steve:

I want you to know I was there the day your dear Brother David was shot and killed. David was my platoon leader that day and I was one of his grunts. I can't say I personally knew David well, as I was assigned to A Company on the 20th of June 1967, one day after the fierce battle on the 19th. I can say, however, we had all good officers through my tour, David being one of them!

I was not too far from your brother when he was hit, and I can assure you the Viet Cong that fired the round, soon went to where dead gooks go. The VC snipers seemed to know who the leaders were and rarely missed. I can recall at least 3 platoon leaders, all shot in the head when I was there, probably because they were shadowed by a radio operator with a tall antenna. Medics, too, were vulnerable.

Our officers—to a man—were concerned about their troops and did everything they could to protect their safety! For this, the men all respected them and did their very best to protect them, too! But, as is said, War is Hell… and some things impossible to control. Such as was David's case.

On January 25, 1968, I was injured with shrapnel myself, suffering a severe head wound and spending 8 months in the hospital. As a result of this injury, my memory is not as sharp as it could be, but I want you to know your brother died facing the enemy like a real man.

I am truly proud to have served with David! You have my deepest sympathy.

Highlands High   1965   2010   Male      JoAnn Thomas '66   AMENDE, Jack Walter Forever husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Jack Walter Amende of Rocklin, Calif., passed away peacefully in his home with his family on Friday, June 25, 2010, at the age of 63. Affectionately referred to as Lightnin', Tumbleweed, Bunk, Dad, and Papa, Jack led a life rich with adventure, family, friendship, and, of course, spontaneity. With seemingly endless interests and passions including nature, golfing, the stock market, poker, art, and community, Jack challenged life itself to keep up with him. Always willing to lend a hand, his strength of character, drive and indiscriminate appreciation and compassion for others have always been testimony to his incredible personal integrity. A master storyteller, Jack captivated his family and friends with a lifetime of games, jokes, tricks, travels, pranks, and schemes that otherwise kept everyone on their toes. He leaves them with a novel of such experiences and stories to share, and dares each of them to ''Let it Ride...''

He is survived by his wife and best friend of 40 years Jo Ann, his daughters Heathar Amende and Marshalle Graham and her husband Jeff Graham; two grandchildren, Greyson and Audrey Graham. He is also survived by his mother Vira Amende, his brother Michael Potjer; his sister Jeri Robbins, and her husband Gary Robbins, as well as extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Potjer and his fathers Robert Amende and Albert Potjer.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 8, at 2 p.m. at Adventure Christian Church, 6401 Stanford Ranch Road in Roseville, Calif. Published in The Sacramento Bee on July 4, 2010

Sept. 16, 1948 - March 17, 2012
Sacramento lost a singular character that made a special stitch in the fabric of our community on March 17. A heart attack took this dear man known to many as 'Uncle Dale', 'Blackie the Mad Dog' and 'Classic Santa.' Dale, raconteur and observer of Sacramento's living history was an indefatigable volunteer and booster of his home town - working tirelessly for such community efforts as: Wrangling volunteers for the County of Sacramento's Exhibit at the State Fair, announcer and parade host for the Sacramento Jazz Festival, Board Member of the KVIE Art Auction, and countless other significant causes.

Dale spent many professional years working as a Senior Account Executive for the Sacramento News & Review, but found his greatest joy as a theater director and award-winning local actor. He savored his finest and most recent recurring role as Sacramento's best Santa Claus for over 30 years.

Son of the late James Daley Black and Mary Katherine Black, Dale is survived by his loving wife (and 'Mrs. Claus') Jean, his beloved daughter Jennifer and husband Andy, his sister, Darlene and husband Joe, his nephew, Bryan and wife Kristen, their children Maxwell and Madelyn, and Bryan's son, Woody, as well as the countless children who were enchanted by Classic Santa.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Crest Theater, 1013 K St., Sacramento, on Wednesday, April 4 at 6:15pm.

Joe would eventually retire from this position after 32 years of proud service to the people of California. An avid photographer, Joe's work was featured in a series of small newspapers and several advertisements in Sacramento Magazine. As a licensed pilot, he cultivated a lifelong appreciation for flying and aviation. He also loved playing the guitar and spending time with his beloved grandchildren. Joe will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the many people he mentored during his time at the Department of Justice. Memorial services will be held this Friday, 10AM at First Baptist Church at 8939 East Stockton Blvd, Elk Grove, CA. Donations in Joe's name may be made to the Law Enforcement Chaplaincy of Sacramento, P.O. Box 2829, Sacramento, CA 95812-2829 or the Wounded Warrior Project via their website at http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/. - See more at: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/sacbee/obituary.aspx?n=george-joseph-doane&pid=172497662&#sthash.Cx6RjcHc.dpuf

Highlands High   1967   2006   Female         PIt is hard to know what to say, exactly, but I'll give you some highlights of my mom's life and if I leave anything out that you would like to know or think is important, just ask me and I'll answer.
Joy was married to Jack Kimple for nearly thirty years until her death in 2006. She had three children; a son, Brooke and two daughters, Claire and Maia. She was a Nurse Practitioner and worked with her husband, a doctor, for many years in a private practice. She also owned and ran a restaurant called Humble Pie, where she was the head chef for about 5 years in the late 80's. She earned her master's degree in the 90's from Sacramento State and was working on her PhD when she was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2005. She also was a health care provider for the VA hospital in Redding, where she helped many people suffering with PTSD. She was fearless, spunky, hilarious, beautiful, kind, generous and fun right up until the very end. She travelled the world, ran marathons, climbed mountains and followed her dreams. She was an incredible mother, wife and friend who gave without measure and showed up when you least expected it but just when you needed it. She is still sorely missed.

Alex Herbert Stothart

Highlands High   1967   2010   Male      Denise Stothart wife   Alex STOTHART July 4, 1949 - November 19, 2010 Alex was born on the Fourth of July in Houston, Texas the youngest child of Kenneth and Helen Stothart, then in 1950, moved with his family to Sacramento. Alex graduated from Highlands High School in 1967 where he was a member of the golf team and marching band. He was an honor student at California State University, Stanislaus where he received his B.S. degree and attended the University of Portland in the state of Oregon for his masters. While in college in Portland he was employed part-time by the city to manage the upgrading and retrofitting of the city's reclamation centers and learned the art of welding. Having a love for the sea, he sought employment with Dellingham International as a welder in the Portland shipyards and within a year set sail on his first voyage as the ship's chief welder. On one of several voyages to Alaska he decided to change careers and purchased a fishing vessel to fish for king crab in the Bering Sea. Unfortunately, after only a few fishing trips the vessel sank as Alex and his crew were being rescued at sea. After this life threatening event, he was glad to be on land and alive, but was now out of work. It was then that he applied to the United States Merchant Marines and was accepted. He worked his way through the ranks to Captain with primary responsibilities in power plant management. Several of Alex's innovations were adopted by the Merchant Marines for command-wide use and are still employed today. He retired from the Merchant Marines in the 1990's. Having traveled the world, he had many wonderful friends on almost every continent. It was while visiting friends that he decided to move to New Zealand's North Island. He bought and completely refurbished a home where he spent his days on the hilltop overlooking Doubtless Bay. Alex was a native Texan, resident of California, adopted Kiwi, and a citizen of the World who will be lovingly remembered. He is survived by his wife, Denise; siblings, Kay Carlile (Raymond), Maria Totora (Russell), Will Stothart (Virginia); and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
