USMC Travels:

From August 1969 to July 1970 I served as Assistant Officer in Charge, Detachment Alfa, NAVFACDANANG/Company "L" Marine Support Battalion, Phubai, Republic of South Vietnam. For most of my tour Major Teddy Nowak was my C.O.

I knew MGYSGT Ed Storm well. In fact I took him and CTRC Robert Gates to MAG 36 op area to catch that fateful helicopter flight that crashed going into Danang.

Top Storm gave me, a Navy Lieutenant at the time, the finest compliment I ever received during my military service. During a heavy monsoon downpour, we took shelter in the Command Defensive Bunker. After chatting a while, he turned to me and said, "Lieutenant,
you would have made an excellent Marine!"

Just before receiving orders to Vietnam, I was in school with Captain Frank Sutherland, Captain Bob Schafler (sp?) and MGYSGT Barney Prosser, who had already been selected for Second Lieutenant. After our schooling, Frank received orders to Ist Radio Battalion Danang. I visited him there on two occasions.

I was forced into disability retirement May 1st, 1982 after serving eighteen years five months.

Personal Quote:

It is not the critic who counts. Not the man
who points out where the stronger man stumbled
or where the doer of deeds could have done them
better. The credit belongs to the man who is actuall in the arena.
